The Tomato Diet: Can You Lose Weight with Tomatoes?

Whether in a salad, stuffed with couscous, or sliced on bread: tomatoes are incredibly versatile and are certainly one of the most popular vegetables among Germans. But can you also lose weight with this perennial favorite? The tomato diet is supposed to make that possible!

What is the Tomato Diet?

The tomato diet is one of the classic mono-diets (see also: rice diet), through which you can lose up to three kilos in four days. Depending on the severity of the diet, almost exclusively tomatoes are on the diet plan – which makes it very one-sided. It should not be carried out for more than a few days.

The Health Benefits of Tomatoes

There are many good reasons to rely on tomatoes as a slimming agent when losing weight:

  • 100 grams contain only about 17 calories (kcal). For comparison: The same amount of apples already comes to 52 kcal!
  • Tomatoes contain the plant substance lycopene. Lycopene reduces the breakdown of collagen – which prevents cellulite.
  • They consist of 90 percent water, but at the same time are very satiating.
  • Tomatoes contain up to one percent potassium, which promotes water balance and helps flush toxins out of the body.
  • Tomatoes hardly raise blood sugar levels, which prevents cravings.
  • Small cherry tomatoes are also suitable as a healthy snack between meals.

Can You Lose Weight Permanently with the Tomato Diet?

Three kilos in just four days is a very ambitious goal – to achieve this, the three daily meals should consist exclusively of tomatoes, i.e., tomato juice and tomato soup. If you eat this way, you’ll probably lose a little weight, but you’ll also probably be sick of tomatoes by the second day.

Recipes to Vary the Tomato Diet

In the softer version of this diet, you also eat mainly tomatoes, but you can combine them with other foods – for example, you could eat a vegetable casserole with tomatoes, mushrooms, and zucchini. Also a delicious recipe: tomato bread!

Watch Out for the JoJo Effect

A mono diet always carries the great danger of the JoJo effect. As soon as you stop the diet and start eating normally again, the lost pounds will, unfortunately, come back faster than you would like. Therefore, the tomato diet is only suitable if you want to lose a little weight in a short time, for example, because the vacation is coming and your bikini figure is not yet as you imagine it (by the way, our weight loss tips could also help you).
